Inspiring Women: Emma from Bespoke Backdrops
This week’s feature for our Inspiring Women Series is Emma of Bespoke Backdrops, to tell us all about why she started her business, her productivity working from home, and her favourite media outlets to work to.
Why did you start your business?
I started Bespoke Backdrops as an experiment in 2015, after scrolling through a large Facebook Group and spotting a post by a prominent business coach in the US. She asked where she could find unique, custom fabric backdrops for her webinars. She didn’t want to buy anything off eBay or Etsy. It had to be totally designed to match her branding.
My mind had a light bulb moment: Eureka!
I was a textile designer and had a business printing a designing upholstery fabrics. I had the design smarts, the production and manufacturing suppliers already in place; all I need to do was re-message, re-market and re-target my business. The core of what I did, the design and printing, was exactly the same.
Five years later, I have now extended the business to branding, because the essence of a custom backdrop is to work with your brand identity. And many of my early clients didn’t even have that. So now the business is called Bespoke Backdrops & Branding. And it’s going gang-busters, I am happy to report.
That curious experiment back in 2015 paid off!
The best way to be productive when working from home?
Have boundaries and a work day schedule. I only work from 9-5:30. At 5:30 I put all my work stuff away, neat and tidy, I pour myself a glass of wine and start cooking. I am in bed by 9pm every night and make sure I read for an hour. Having those routines prevents me form working 24/7. They help delineate work time from leisure time.
I used to be a podcast addict: Lady Start Up from Mama Mia, Mixergy, The Honest Designers Show, What Works.
But these days I listen less to podcasts. My go to place to learn and be entertained in the process, is YouTube. I will listen and watch hour long videos from my favourite design channels, while I work on my own design work. I am excellent at listening to a video or TV show while designing. In fact I do my best work when I have the TV or a YouTube video on!
